Farmers markets survive a close call
September 30, 2009
Portland's farmers markets - ranked first in the world earlier this month - had a near miss recently.
An announcement from the County Assessor in mid-September had the City - and the farmers markets - on the hook for a tax bill of more than $200,000. The retroactive bill would have taxed the Park Blocks land where the farmers markets are located.
Fortunately, after meeting with Commissioner Fish, and thanks to the work of Multnomah County Chair Ted Wheeler, the Assessor withdrew the tax bill.
