PSU Bike Hub

For several years, Portland State University has offered students, faculty, and staff expert bike advice, clinics, and hands-on repair instruction all in hopes of increasing the number of people biking to campus.  Originally dubbed the PSU Bike Co-op, this humble little bike repair center served thousand of PSU community members with very limited resources.  What the Co-op lacked in heat, running water, and restrooms it made up for with customer service, know-how, and dedication.

With the construction of a new recreation center on campus, the PSU Bike Co-op has gotten the respect it deserves, graduating to new digs and getting a new moniker.  The Bike Hub now occupies a beautiful new space right on the transit mall.  MAX trains zip by as students and staff work on bikes together.  Its what some of us transportation wonks might call utopia.

Unfortunately for the rest of us, the Bike Hub only serves the PSU community.  Of course, with 25,000 28,000 students (and growing) and some 2,500 employees, the PSU community is quite large.  Its the single largest destination in the region for TriMet riders.  And the bike mode split has grown tremendously at campus, both among students and employees.

The Bike Hub prominently displays its membership and mode split numbers.

PSU really is a model of sustainability in the city and the Bike Hub is leading the way.  From its humble origins to its current, full-service operation the Bike Hub is a valuable addition to the city's transportation community.
