Housing Bureau announces $5.2 million in grants to support affordable rental housing

May 18, 2010

Pardee Commons, at SE 122nd and Pardee, opened last September

This morning the Portland Housing Bureau (PHBannounced $5.2 million in grantsfor seven affordable housing projects aimed at increasing affordable rental housing in Portland.

The grants are funded by a mix of federal and City money allocated for affordable housing development and preservation. The selection process prioritized projects that target people in the 0 - 30% Median Family Income (MFI) range, which for a family of four means $21,000 or less per year. Many of the selected projects also target seniors, people with disabilities, and homeless families and individuals.

"PHB is committed to addressing the continuum of housing needs in Portland, and affordable rental housing is an absolutely critical part of the housing solution for many families and individuals. By investing in affordable rental housing, we are helping create vibrant, safe, healthy, and diverse neighborhoods that meet the needs of the most vulnerable people with the lowest incomes."

Supported projects include Briarwood East Apartments, Holgate House, Mark O. Hatfield Building, The Halsey Project, various PCRI sites, Otesha Place, and Madrona Studios. Community partners include the Native American Youth and Family Center, Central City Concern, JOIN, Portland Community Reinvestment Initiative, and the Sabin Community Development Corporation.
