Dispatches from America's #1 Bike City

Commuter Central's Senior Bicycling Correspondent, Dan Bower, is currently investigating bicycling conditions in Bicycling Magazine's #1 bike city in America (Minneapolis, by the way)  and has this story to file:

We're sure to hear more from Dan in the next few days to come.  How about some action shots of the bike paths being plowed by those fabled snowmobiles?

Dan's "story" is just a photo. And as you can see from the "back story" of this photo, that despite having the snowiest-ever month of December in history the streets of Minneapolis have been cleared enough for bus travel, mini-van parking and even space for what looks like a moving van.

One can still commute on the streets and the snowplowed bike paths here in America's #1 bike friendly city after some 30" of snow in a month. What one cannot easily do is walk on the sidewalks or park a bike once you get somewhere. The city of Minneapolis clears the streets and bike paths IMMEDIATELY, the residents and business owners must still clear the walks and driveways. During the 15 years I lived in Portland I discovered that one cannot count on driving (and certainly not biking) after even an inch of snow. The city that prides itself on "keeping weird" should appreciate like-minded, bike-loving, colder-weather folks weird enough to still commute by bike even if that means locking your bike atop a snow-drifted sidewalk.

I hate to break the news to my fellow Rosecity pals, but Minneapolis is not only the #1 bike friendly city, but the music scene here is more interesting too. However, you can take solace in the fact that microbrews and micro-roasters are still lagging far behind those in Portland. I have heard those are on the checklist of things to improve this year. But we promise not to best Portland in rainy days.
