ReUse PDX update: Habitat for Humanity ReStore expanding
February 23, 2011
Most of us have heard of Habitat for Humanity, which helps low-income families achieve the dream of homeownership by selling homes at cost and requiring 500 hours of 'sweat equity' from the future homeowners.
Not all of us have heard of the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. The ReStore is one of our ReUse PDX partners, and we're very proud to work with them and support their two-part mission: to help Habitat for Humanity provide homes for low-income families, and to promote the value of reuse by keeping usable materials out of the waste stream. Portland-area ReStores have raised over $1 million for Habitat for Humanity over the last 10 years and keep over 1,800 tons of materials out of landfills each year.
There are two ReStores in our area - one in Portland's central east side, and one in Vancouver. Visit pdxrestore.org for more info.
We're excited to share that a new ReStore will soon be coming to Washington County - the grand opening will take place on Earth Day, April 22, and then the Washington County ReStore will open for donations and sales!
