November 1, 2011

Today, we're very proud to announce that Portland Parks & Recreation has been selected to receive the National Gold Medal Award for cities of 250,000 or more from the nation's top park and recreation organizations.

The award, presented by the National Recreation & Park Association in partnership with the American Academy for Park & Recreation Administration, was announced today at the NRPA/AARPA Annual Congress & Exposition.

Director Mike Abbate will formally accept the award in Atlanta on behalf of PP&R.

The National Gold Medal Award recognizes demonstrated excellence in long-range planning, resource management, volunteerism, environmental stewardship, program development, professional development, and agency recognition. It is the top honor given by NRPA and AARPA.

In 1903, the Olmsteds presented an inspiring vision for Portland's park system to the City Council, writing that "a liberal provision of parks in a city is one of the surest manifestations of the intelligence, degree of civilization and progressiveness of its citizens."

For more than a century, our community has been steadfast in its commitment to creating a world-class system of parks, trails, and natural areas. Today, our parks system in the envy of communities around the country.

This national honor is a tribute to a strong legacy of leadership and public support for our parks, and to the good work that PP&R staff, volunteers, and community partners continue today.
