Parks programs help special needs Portlanders

March 14, 2012

By David Nguyen

Tom Hallman Jr. shared a wonderful article in The Oregonian earlier this week regarding Portland Parks & Recreation's programs for special needs Portlanders.

In the article, Tom wrote about a monthly dance at Mount Scott Community Center for people who are developmentally disabled.  Tom describes the dance as an exercise in “humanity, fragility and friendship.”  The dance is one of the many monthly activities offered by Portland Parks’ Adaptive and Inclusive Recreation (AIR) program.

The program offers various community-based recreation activities and leisure services specially designed for children, teens, and adults who have a disability and/or special needs.

Founded in 1964, AIR’s primary goal is to assist people in developing and using their leisure time in ways that enhance their health, well-being, and independence. The program is considered one of the top specialized community recreation programs in the United States.
