Preserving the legacy of Lawrence Halprin

August 10, 2012

The Oregonian Editorial Board published an article today highlighting the Halprin Open Space Sequence and the work of local non-profit Halprin Landscape Conservancy in preserving Portland's beloved downtown fountains.

The Halprin Open Space Sequence was born from architect Lawrence Halprin's vision for community in the heart of Portland.  His innovative design links fountains, plazas, parks, and other open spaces with the bustle of the city - businesses, residences, and other private ventures.

In his own words, Halprin explained that "the space is choreographed for movement with nodes for quiet & contemplation, action & inaction, hard & soft, yin & yang."

The Halprin Open Sequence links some of Portland's most well-known downtown Portland Parks & Recreation spaces - the Ira Keller Fountain, the Lovejoy Fountain, and Pettygrove Park.

During this time of tight budgets, maintaining our spaces can be challenging.  We rely on our public/private partnerships to support our Gold Medal system.  Our partnership with the Halprin Landscape Conservancy will ensure that Halprin's legacy lasts for the next generations of Portlanders.
