Hot temperatures coming to Portland

August 15, 2012

By David Nguyen

Temperatures are supposed to be in the triple digits this week, and we all need to look after ourselves, our pets, and our neighbors - especially older adults.  Staying hydrated; avoiding prolonged sun exposure, over-exertion, and heavy meals; and finding a shady, well-ventilated or air-conditioned space to sit out the hottest part of the day will help us all keep cool.

Multnomah County is setting up several cooling centers across the metro area for those 55 and older:

Loaves & Fishes Centers, Elm Court

503-953-8204

1032 S.W. Main St

8:30 a.m - 6 p.m

Hollywood Senior Center

503-288-8303

 1820 N.E. 40th Ave

 8:30 a.m - 8 p.m (closes 4:30 p.m. Friday)

Friendly House

503-224-2640

1737 N.W. 26th Ave

8:30 a.m - 8 p.m

YWCA Senior Services, Multnomah County East Building

503-988-3840

600 N.E. 8th St

8 a.m - 8 p.m (closes 5 p.m. Wednesday)

Other options to stay cool include Portland Parks & Recreation’s six indoor and seven outdoor pools, and Parks’ splash pads - fun water fountains for splashing around.
