Kids Cook! this Saturday, August 19
August 16, 2012
Join Portland Parks & Recreation and our community partners this weekend at the St. Johns Community Center for Kids Cook!
This is a free, family celebration of seasonal foods exploration, cooking lessons and healthy living.
Partner Organizations, including Outgrowing Hunger, Growing Gardens, Slow Food Portland, Partners for a Hunger Free Oregon, and the St. Johns Farmers Market, will host 'I Tried It' stations where kids will taste seasonal produce and earn prizes for their willingness to explore.
Kids Cook! will also feature:
- Cooking demonstrations by The Portland Kitchen, The Natural Epicurean Academy of Culinary Arts and Grow Afterschool.
- Free kid-friendly samples of recipes from local eateries Cathedral Park Kitchen, Proper Eats, Hopworks Urban Brewery and Che Cafe.
- Prizes from Powell's Books, St. Johns Book Sellers, Portland Nursery and HomeFarm.
- Seed-planting activity with Portland Community Gardens
Kids Cook! is based on Portland Parks & Recreation's new Grow Afterschool program which encourages healthy, active lifestyles for kids by introducing them to tasting, cooking and planting Oregon's seasonal bounty.
Grow Afterschool debuted last summer as a pilot project at the St. Johns and Charles Jordan Community Centers. A USDA Food and Nutrition Service Child Care Wellness grant made this project possible. This fall, St. Johns, Charles Jordan, Sellwood, and Hillside Community Centers will all offer Grow Afterschool programming.
