The City of Roses is expanding Arbor Day to Arbor Month!
March 28, 2013
Join Portland Parks & Recreation during the entire month of April to celebrate our trees.
Arbor Day has been celebrated in the United States since 1872, and is now recognized world-wide as a day to honor our trees. Here in Portland, we like to celebrate all month long!
In April, discover Portland’s 300 Heritage Trees and learn how they work around the clock filtering our water, cleaning our air, cooling the city, providing wildlife habitat, and doing a wide-range of other helpful and healthy things for our city.
PP&R cares for 1.2 million trees in our City parks and natural areas, and oversees an additional 240,000 street trees across the city! The amount of Portland’s land covered by trees - known as the urban canopy - has increased by nearly 3% during the past nine years. Currently, 30% of Portland’s surface area is covered in urban forest. The success is due to efforts undertaken by important partnerships among PP&R and the Tree Stewardship Coalition, Friends of Trees, and the Bureau of Environmental Services.
