Commissioners Fish and Novick identify long-term budget savings

Today, The Oregonian’s Ryan Kost highlighted the work of Commissioners Fish and Novick's budget subcommittee. The subcommittee outlined nearly $5 million in potential savings for the City.
The subcommittee identified a number of savings – many of which could be on-going savings to the City each year. The subcommittee focused on long-term savings to Portland taxpayers, rather than “quick fixes.”
In the report, the subcommittee notes that “the city could save millions by reducing overhead and improving efficiency.”
They propose savings in three main categories: protecting diversity gains in public safety bureaus, cutting more than the Mayor’s suggested 10% from certain bureaus, and reducing materials and services costs in the City’s Office of Management and Finance budget.
Over the next two months, Nick will work with his Council colleagues to craft a responsible budget that addresses our short-term deficit while protecting the core services and programs that Portlanders value.
