First and Future First Citizen Awards

April 18, 2013

Last week, Nick was proud to attend PMAR’s First Citizen Banquet, where Jean DeMaster and Sophia Kecskes were presented with the First Citizen and Future First Citizen awards.

The First Citizen Award is presented annually by the Portland Metropolitan Association of Realtors (PMAR). The award honors civic achievements and business leadership.

This year’s First Citizen, Jean DeMaster, has spent over 40 years working tirelessly to help individuals and families experiencing homelessness get off the streets and into housing.

Jean’s storied career includes time as the Executive Director of Children’s Club, the YWCA, and Transition Projects. While with Transition Projects, Jean opened the first homeless shelter and transitional housing facility that was solely for women. The shelter is named Jean’s Place in her honor.

Jean now serves as Executive Director of Human Solutions. Last year, she was proud to  open the Rockwood Building, a multi-service center to serve homeless and low-income families in the Rockwood area.

Our office’s very own Sophia Kecskes was given the Future First Citizen Award – an award and $5,000 scholarship that is given annually to an outstandingPortlandhigh school senior.

Sophia has been an active in the youth community since she was 13.  In just the last two years, she has volunteered over 400 hours to the Multnomah Youth Commission. She is an outstanding leader and a wonderful example for other youth in our community. We all know she has a bright future ahead of her.

Congratulations to our First Citizens! Thanks for all you do to make a positive difference in our community.
