Soccer City, USA in the spotlight

July 31, 2014

Get ready Portland! This Friday ushers in a week-long celebration of world-class soccer.

Portland will welcome our MLS All Stars and Germany’s Bayern Munich with a number of events – including free concerts on the Waterfront, the chance to watch World Cup champs train at Providence Park, and a pop-up soccer field in Pioneer Square!

Our local small businesses have also caught soccer fever. Thanks to grants from Venture Portland, the Hawthorne, Parkrose, Overlook and University Park business associations are each hosting soccer events and special promotions in their districts (see list below for more info).

On Wednesday, Portland will be the world’s soccer spotlight as our MLS All Stars take on Bayern Munich at Providence Park. The German squad will include World Cup stars such as Bastian Schweinsteiger, Thomas Muller, and the World Cup Final winning goal-scorer, Mario Gotze.

The Oregonian’s Jaime Hale breaks it down for us – from soccer matches to grilled cheese contests, Portland is showing the world why we’re known as Soccer City, USA.
