Construction work is happening in various areas of the city as Environmental Services manages Portland’s sewer and stormwater infrastructure. Over one-third of Portland’s more than 2,500 miles of sewer pipes are more than 80 years old. Projects to replace or repair aging infrastructure and restore Portland’s watersheds protect water quality, public health, and the environment. This construction will reduce the possibility of sewage releases into homes, streets, rivers, and streams. In addition, green infrastructure — such as green street planters and rain gardens — plays an important role by filtering pollutants out of stormwater to protect our rivers and streams.
During the COVID 19 Emergency, Environmental Services is taking extra measures to protect the public, construction crews, and our employees. Crews have been directed and supported to follow the CDC guidelines for protecting themselves and the public. Protocols are in place for social distancing, hygiene, and safety. Our construction managers and site inspectors will be diligent in ensuring that these protocols are followed as we continue critical construction projects that protect public health and our environment.
We will continue to provide updates during this COVID-19 emergency.
