Adaptive & Inclusive Recreation (AIR)

Portland Parks & Recreation COVID-19 update
All indoor recreation facilities, including community centers and pools, are temporarily closed. Learn more.

Offering community-based recreation activities and leisure services specially designed for children, teens, and adults who have a disability and/or special needs. Our services are designed to assist people in developing and using their leisure time in ways that enhance their health, well-being, and independence.

Considered one of the top specialized community recreation programs in the United States, the AIR program serves people of all ages at sites throughout the city, including PP&R's community centers, teen programs, and SUN community schools. Participants who do not live in the Portland city limits pay a slightly higher fee.

Adaptive Classes, Trips, and Activities
Call the AIR Adaptive Programming Coordinator at 503-823-2883 to register when you find a class or activity you would like to participate in. You can also email the program staff, (see below) for assistance and questions. Our monthly dance and weekly bowling programs are drop-in activities, no pre-registration is required.

Inclusion Services
If you are in need of our inclusion services, please register for your class or activity, then contact Lyndsey Goforth at 971-284-5060 for an accommodation request. Accommodation requests should be completed at least ten (10) days prior to the start of the class or activity. All swim-inclusion requests are taken care of at the swimming pool where you are registered.

Adaptive and Inclusive Staff
Our staff has a wide variety of experience working with people who have special needs. Direct service staff have experience in community recreation, education, or clinical settings. Many staff have college degrees, including therapeutic recreation, social work, school counseling, and human resources management.

Inclusive Playgrounds

Per Oregon Governor Kate Brown’s executive order: All Portland Parks & Recreation (and all public) playgrounds, outdoor sports courts and fields (including, but not limited to, basketball courts, skateparks, tennis courts, soccer fields) are CLOSED and should be avoided. This is a necessary step and mandated by the Oregon Governor’s Executive Order, to support public health and to limit the spread of COVID-19.
