Beginning in July 2018 and continuing through 2022, all elevators in Portland’s downtown SmartPark Garages will gradually be updated and modernized. Elevators will be out of service at the time of their replacement.
The elevator modernization project aims to ensure the elevators operate more reliably and efficiently, and that they meet current standards for safety and accessibility.

Q: What is the purpose of the project?
A: SmartPark Garage elevators have not been upgraded since the mid-1990s, more than 20 years ago. As a result, they periodically break down. Some elevators do not comply with current safety and accessibility standards. Not only will the new elevators meet current standards, but they will be equipped with a monitoring system that will allow immediate notification in the case of any operational problem.
Q: How long will the elevators be out of service?
A: It takes approximately 12 weeks to update each elevator.
Q: What is the source of funding for the Elevator Modernization Project?
A: Revenue generated from the SmartPark Garages will finance the Elevator Modernization Project. No funding is generated through local taxes.
Q: Some SmartPark Garages have only two elevators. When one is being modernized, what happens if the other elevator breaks down?
A: The garage will provide van service to people with limited mobility if both elevators are out of service.
Q: How will people with disabilities benefit from the project?
A: The elevators will be brought up to current ADA standards, with updated tactile, display, and physical features.
