In September 2019, SE 45^th Avenue from SE Glenwood Street to SE Harney Street will undergo preventative maintenance, including repaving and restriping. During re-paving projects, PBOT seeks to improve the traffic operations and safety for all road users. By combining maintenance projects with operational improvements, such as new striping configurations, PBOT maintains the transportation system and improves road safety more efficiently.

PBOT proposes safety and operational improvements for SE 45^th Avenue from SE Glenwood Street to SE Harney Street, including:

• Designing the street for future pedestrian facilities, including crosswalks.

• Improving bicycle infrastructure by adding more space to the existing lanes.

• Creating a street design that provides more space for people and reflects the neighborhood character of the corridor.

SE 45^th Avenue is an important corridor serving a variety of road users. Crash history shows that the street is particularly unsafe for people bicycling and recorded speeds are significantly higher than the posted speed limit (30 mph).

• Safety concerns: In the last 10 years of data (2007-2016) five people bicycling have been seriously injured traveling the corridor. Current bicycle facilities do not meet the City's minimum guidelines or federal recommendations.

• Speeds are too high: Based on a recent traffic study at SE Lexington Street most vehicles travel around 39 mph on SE 45^th Ave. The current speed limit is 25 mph. More than 38% of the vehicles recorded were traveling more than 10 mph over the speed limit (30 mph at the time of the study).

• The space is used inefficiently: On-street parking is lightly used with less than 10% of the parking spaces occupied, while some of the corridor is missing sidewalks.

To improve the safety, accessibility, and comfort for people traveling on SE 45^th Avenue, PBOT proposes restriping the street to include protected bicycle lanes. These changes will emphasize the neighborhood character of the street and allow for more space for people walking and bicycling.

Designs are not yet finalized. PBOT is currently doing outreach to the neighborhood to better understand community needs and preferences.
