The Portland Water Bureau and other agencies regularly conduct activities to protect water quality and to operate the water supply and hydroelectric facilities. The bureau also implements specific projects in the watershed to comply with state and federal regulations and sustain or upgrade the water supply infrastructure.

The bureau regularly produces a quarterly schedule of these projects as well as ongoing maintenance activities that are happening or planned to occur in the Bull Run Watershed Management Unit on a quarterly basis. The list is updated and available at the beginning of January, April, July, and October of each year.

Significant projects that are occurring now or are in the design or planning stage include:

• The City of Portland and the Mt. Hood National Forest are pursuing a land exchange that would convey approximately 2,800 acres of National Forest System land to the City of Portland in exchange for approximately 2,500 acres of City-owned lands. Under the proposal, the forested uplands currently owned by the City of Portland would be exchanged federal lands that surround and are under the two water supply reservoirs and water system facilities.  
• The 50-year Bull Run Water Supply Habitat Conservation Plan is in its second year of implementation. The HCP identifies activities to create and improve habitat for threatened fish species listed under the federal Endangered Species Act. Implementation of the plan allows the bureau to operate the water system lawfully under the regulations of both the Endangered Species and Clean Water acts.
