The City of Portland’s Climate Emergency Declaration (June 30, 2020) adopted a new target to achieve a 50% reduction in carbon emissions from 1990 levels by 2030, and reach net-zero carbon emissions before 2050. City bureaus are responsible for implementing actions to help meet this commitment.
The Water Bureau calculates carbon emissions from electricity, natural gas, and fuel use and reports these in regular Carbon Footprint report since 2007. Understanding how and in what quantities the bureau is generating carbon emissions provides staff with tools for implementing energy efficiency, renewable energy and fleet efficiency efforts to manage and reduce the bureau’s contribution to climate change. The following table depicts Water Bureau operational carbon emissions from the six most recent years.
