Maintaining and replacing aging infrastructure such as valves provides the Water Bureau with the ability to maintain other parts of the water distribution and transmission system without disruption to the water supply. This project will allow water service continuity to occur during present and future maintenance.
The first of three phases of the Northeast Portland Water System Valve Maintenance and Replacement Project began in June 2019 near and in the Portland Water Bureau’s Vernon Tank site at Sabin Hydropark on NE 19th and Skidmore. All work was performed by Portland Water Bureau crews. The work for Phase 1 was complete in August 2019.
Phase 2 of the project began the week of August 24, 2020 in NE 33rd Ave. and Mason St. and on the east side of Wilshire Park along NE 33rd Ave. The water system work is complete as of September 25. Final paving and curb restoration has been completed.
The last phase will involve connecting the water mains in NE 33rd Ave. To minimize traffic impacts, the work will be done on Thursday Dec. 10 at 7 pm to 6 am Friday Dec. 11.
Portland Water Bureau crews will perform water system maintenance at the intersection of NE 33rd Ave. and NE Brazee St. The work requires that NE 33rd Ave. be closed to all traffic between Thompson and Knott streets.
Both north and southbound traffic on NE 33rd Ave. will be detoured around the construction site on NE 32nd Pl. Traffic signs will direct travelers around the closure area.
The traveling public is reminded to stay alert and use caution as traffic may suddenly slow or stop. To avoid traffic delays, motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes around the work site.
